Is it safe to answer this on tumblr of all places? :)
Well, as a practicing Catholic, I am definitively pro-life. That is, I believe that abortion is the intentional murder of a human person, and that therefore the state has an obligation to ban this gravely immoral practice as a criminal act as it does murder of people already born.
Think of it this way: say you had a scrapbook of yourself — say you had a picture of yourself every day you, as a particular entity, have lived. (Obviously, it’s quite a large scrapbook).
Now, say that you are sentimental one day and you want to look at how you have grown over the course of your life. So, you start to flip through your scrapbook, starting at today’s photograph. Then, you look at yesterday’s, and so forth. Now, say you come to the day of your birth. Is it possible, that there are pictures of yourself, before you were born? Could someone have taken a photograph of the “thing” we call you?
Assuredly. So we continue to flip back, and we find pictures of you still in the womb. In the fullest sense of the word, you in the womb, the day before your birth, is still you. And you can continue to watch, retroactively, your development as a distinct “thing” all the way until you reach your conception. Before then, there is no particular actualised thing that we call you, but rather the cells of your parents, which had the potentiality to form you as a distinct individual.
The unborn child doesn’t just have the potentiality to become a person. After conception, it is an actual individual, and as it develops into a fully grown human, which is of course more familiar to us as an example of a person. My identity as a human person didn’t appear at the moment of birth — I can trace the thing I call myself further and further into the past, until the moment of conception.
Here's a link to an article by the philosopher Alexander Pruss on the matter of identity :)
Have a wonderful day and God Bless!
